I work on the security of airborne communications, specifically on attacks and defense mechanisms for physical and MAC layers of Flying Ad hoc Networks (FANET). I’m currently investigating cyber-physical attacks on UAV networks, and vulnerabilities of Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS).


Any collection of interacting agents can be modeled as a network, notable examples of which are neurons in the nervous system, birds flying in flocks, competing businesses in a market, and even wars, uprisings and insurgencies. Things get more exciting when the agents of such networks are autonomous and make decisions individually. I apply techniques from various disciplines such as game theory, quantum dynamics, control theory and thermodynamic to study and model the evolution and nonlinear dynamics of  these complex formations.


Not so long ago, if you married someone from an influential family, the reach and influence of your own family would spike overnight. If the majority of your friends are gang members, there is a good chance that you become a gang member yourself. If your secretive, totalitarian boss were to get hit by a boss tomorrow, chances are you’d be out looking for another job pretty soon. These examples show the importance of topology of connections in systems of interacting agents. I work on the topological security of networks by developing methods for inference, detection and exploitation of structural vulnerabilities in social, epidemic, biological and communications networks.
